Information on Strahan, TAS 7468
Strahan was once a bustling port during Tasmania's mining mecca of the 1800s. It is now a historic harbour-side village, famous throughout Australia for its river cruises, located on Tasmania's remote west coast.
This charming waterfront town serves as the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tasmanian Wilderness, offering visitors access to pristine rainforest, dramatic coastlines, and rich convict history. It is also an excellent base where the West Coast Wilderness Railway can be accessed, Gordon River cruises can be taken, and other adventurous ways of negotiating the western edges of the South West World Heritage area.

Travel options
From Hobart, the drive will take you 4.5 hours. Launceston sits about 3 hours and 40 minutes away and Devonport gets you their quickest at nearly 3 hours. Tassielink Transit operates a bus from Railway Station, Driffield Street to Opposite IGA, Reid Street 3 times a day. Tickets cost $5–7 and the journey takes 51 min from nearby Queenstown.
You can fly into Launceston and Hobart or catch the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport. An overnight sailing on The Spirit of Tasmania was my choice to get to Tasmania from Melbourne. Self-driving remains the most popular option, allowing visitors to experience the spectacular mountain scenery en route.
