The Creekside Hotel, Warracknabeal, Victoria - Closure After 154 Years

31 December 2024

The Creekside Hotel in the Victorian town of Warracknabeal, 330 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, announced it is closing as of 1 January 2025. The owners of the pub, which has been serving patrons since its inception as the Commercial Hotel in 1870, blamed lower than expected sales and debts for the closure. The historic venue has been a cornerstone of the small rural community for more than 150 years.

The owners also blamed the closure on the stress they suffered after the collapse of their business association. The announcement has devastated locals who have used the venue as a social hub for generations. Patrons have been sharing memories on social media, with one saying "My husband and I loved coming over for a meal not once were we disappointed, stand tall, you gave it your best shot". The closure reflects a broader trend of rural Australian pubs struggling with economic pressures and declining populations.
