Information on Parachilna, SA 5730
Parachilna is a tiny outback town in South Australia's Flinders Ranges, located on the railway line between Port Augusta and Leigh Creek. The name comes from the Aboriginal word meaning "place of peppermint gum trees."
Originally surveyed in 1863 near a government water well, the town was relocated in 1881 when the railway arrived. Today, with a population of just five to seven people, the Prairie Hotel forms the beating heart of this remote settlement, famous for its "feral food" menu featuring native Australian ingredients like kangaroo, emu, and camel.
