Hotel was established in the early 1860's by William McIlveen and soon after passed to the Schofield family, reputedly in a game of cards. The Schofield family still operate the Hotel.

Nundle is a 4.5-hour drive from Sydney via the New England Highway, turning off 35 km from the highway, and just under an hour from Tamworth.

Visitors can fly into Tamworth Airport and hire a car to explore the region, with Qantas operating daily direct flights between Sydney and Tamworth, and Link Airways operating flights between Tamworth and Brisbane six days a week. The sealed road from Tamworth passes Chaffey Dam.
