The Quiet Man Rises Again

16 September 2025

A beloved Melbourne Irish pub has been given a new lease on life after nearly facing the wrecking ball. The Quiet Man, which served its final pints on St Patrick's Day this year, has reopened as Auntie Annie's Hotel under new ownership.

The Kensington venue, originally built in Dublin in 1998 and reassembled near Flemington Racecourse, was saved from demolition by James Gallagher and Zenita O'Neill of Zengal Hospitality Group. The pair purchased the site for an estimated $4.5 million, preventing its transformation into a $12 million apartment development.

The renovated venue features Australia's only double-barrelled Guinness taps, capable of pouring two pints simultaneously—a response to the 200 percent increase in Guinness orders observed over the past eight years. The old dining room has been converted into the main bar, showcasing various Irish spirits alongside the signature stout.

The owners have focused on establishing an authentic Irish pub experience where everyone feels welcome.

Located steps from Flemington Racecourse, Auntie Annie's combines Irish hospitality with Melbourne's sporting culture, offering everything from Gaelic games coverage to race day excitement.
