Victoria Hotel (The Vic)

Victoria Hotel

Established in 1868 it is a heritage listed building.

  • A range of accommodation to suit different budgets
  • Dining

When choosing your accommodation in the Rutherglen wine region be sure to choose the Victoria Hotel. The hotel is located right in the centre of the historic village of Rutherglen and is a great place to base yourself when exploring this famous wine region. Rutherglen is one of Australia's oldest wine regions and the families that founded the region are still making wine in the region today (they probably drank at The Vic!!!). This region is famous for varieties such as Durif, Shiraz and Cabernet as well as some of the world's best Muscat.

This unique, heritage listed building has changed little over the last 140 years and is currently being renovated to reflect its former grandure. The Vic is a great Australian pub – the real deal, complete with a grand verandah, cast iron lace work, magnificent stained glass windows, open fireplaces and oozing old world charm (the pub still has its own mortuary...not in use these days though...!!!!)

The hotel offers a range of accommodation to suit different budgets. Rutherglen is situated on the fantastic Murray to Mountains cycle trail and is the perfect location for a cycling holiday. With this in mind Sarah and Sean developed an award winning cycle concierge service and the pub is considered 'wheely friendly' accommodation. Guests can choose casual dining in our Bistro, beautiful shady Beer Garden or in our traditional Australian 'front Bar' with tap and boutique beers and an impressive list of Rutherglen wines or sit up on the grand verandah and watch the world go by.

Fancy a 'bit on the side'?! You can dine with Mrs Brown in the newly renovated dining room or in private Parlour. At Mrs Brown the seasons and the market rule the menu as does imagination and culinary flair from Sean the is matched with some of the finest wines from the region. The best way to enjoy Mrs Brown is at a relaxed and decadent pace. Keep an eye on the specials boards and don't miss the desserts.

In the 1860's, devastated after the death of her much loved husband Albert, Queen Victoria increasingly relied on her Scottish manservant John Brown. Rumours of a romantic connection and even a secret marriage appeared in print and the Queen was referred to as 'Mrs Brown'. In light of the name of the hotel and the spirit of this story Sean and Sarah decided to name their new "bit on the side", Mrs Brown.

The Owners

The Victoria Hotel is run by Sarah Pilgrim and Sean Morris. Leaving sleepy Fishguard in Wales, Chef Sean Morris started his hospitality career in the kitchens of London's Claridges Hotel. After completing his training with London's Savoy Group Sean worked in the South of France where he caught the travel bug. Working in Food and Beverage management Sean travelled to Melbourne joining the Regent Hotel where he met his wife and business partner Sarah and started his love affair with Australia.

Together Sean and Sarah joined the Intercontinental Hotel Group and travelled through Europe, Africa and the Middle East managing hotels in Athens, Cairo and the United Arab Emirates. In settling back in Australia in 2006 the couple fell in love with The Vic and Rutherglen, and the hotels's potential to become one of Victoria's premiere food and wine destinations.
