Mount Surprise is a rural town in the Gulf Savannah of Far North Queensland, located 285 kilometres west of Cairns. This railway town on the Cairns to Forsayth Railway serves as a gateway to the Gulf Savannah and is renowned as a gem fossicking centre, where visitors can find topaz, quartz, spinel, garnet, cairngorm and aquamarine.
The area features extraordinary geological attractions including the Undara Lava Tubes and Talaroo Hot Springs, making it an ideal base for outback exploration and adventure.

Mount Surprise is accessible by road via the Gulf Development Road, approximately 319 kilometres southwest of Cairns. The historic Savannahlander Train operates between Cairns and Forsayth, stopping at Mount Surprise on Thursdays and Fridays from March to December.
Most visitors arrive by private vehicle or coach, with the town serving as a convenient stopover along the Savannah Way touring route.
