Atherton was the first town settled in the region, sitting on the side of Hallorans Hill, an extinct volcano, and surrounded by the Seven Sisters, a small collection of hills. Located in the heart of the Atherton Tablelands, this historic highland town serves as a gateway to one of Far North Queensland's most scenic regions.
On the outskirts of town sits a unique Chinese temple dating back to 1903, the timber and corrugated-iron Hou Wang Temple, the only one of its kind outside of China, built during a brief gold rush. The town offers visitors a charming base for exploring the surrounding waterfalls, volcanic crater lakes, and lush rainforests.
