Amber fluid ready to flow again in Timboon

IT may have been the town with no beer, but from Monday the golden liquid will start flowing from Timboon pub's taps again.

Locals were mystified when the town's only pub closed without explanation earlier this year.

Former publican Tim Kelson later revealed he "just couldn't afford to keep it propped up".

But Warrnambool hotelier Graeme Welsh, who has taken on the near century-old pub's leasehold, believes he can turn the watering hole's fortunes around.

Mr Welsh yesterday told The Standard that gearing up the pub to trade again was a challenge.

"It's a lot more work than I realised. It's been a real battle but we are getting there," Mr Welsh said.

"We have had to get all the amenities back on. There was no phone, no power and no gas. We have also had to flush out the beer lines and there's been no hot water.

"Hopefully in six months' time we will look back on this and it will all be worth it."

Almost 700 people joined an online campaign on social networking site Facebook to save the hotel which closed the week before the town's football team won the Warrnambool and District League grand final.

The bar will reopen Monday, with the bistro set to serve meals on Friday.

Mr Welsh said he had started with a clean slate, hiring all new staff, including a chef.

"A good chef is extremely hard to come by and we have managed to get one."

The pub's accommodation is ready for bookings.

Mr Welsh sold his share of Warrnambool's Victoria Hotel in September. He plans to live on site in Timboon.
