"Joseph Purday and Alfred Smith established a saddlery on the corner of main and Church streets in 1857.

In 1864 Purday in Partbership with Henry Tanner, converted the shop to a hotel.Tanner followed by his wife Ann were licencees until 1892.

In 1911 the Chalet was rebuilt in a swiss chalet style."
