Information on Arthurton, 5572

Arthurton is a small rural service town in the centre of Yorke Peninsula, situated approximately 18 kilometres north of Maitland.

Originally known as Kalkabury, the settlement was renamed Arthurton in 1877 by Governor Sir Arthur Musgrave after his infant son. Located at one of the highest points on the Peninsula, 273 metres above sea level, the town services farmers working some of Australia's richest soils.

Historic century-old buildings include the original council chambers (now community meeting rooms), and Uniting and Catholic churches. North of town, the Smith brothers designed and built their prototype stump jump plough, revolutionising agricultural cultivation.
